Amphibious Ships

Aircraft

Since the advent of flight decks on Amphibious ships, helicopters have been heavily relied upon for bringing the troops, supplies and equipment ashore. Some aircraft may also be used for offensive/defensive measures against submarines, ships and land targets.

Harrier II — AV-8B

Harrier II

These “jump jets” have the ability for vertical take-off/landing from short fields, roads and surface ships. They can provide defensive air support to ground forces, or attack a tactical target in a matter of minutes. Harriers were the most forward-deployed tactical strike aircraft used throughout Operation Desert Storm and were used for bombing runs during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Osprey — V-22A

Osprey

This multi-mission aircraft has both the vertical take-off/landing capability of a helicopter and the long-range cruise ability of a twin turboprop aircraft. Once airborne, the engine and propellers rotate 90 degrees forward, converting the V-22 to a high-speed, fuel-efficient turboprop airplane. Another advantage of the rotating wing is its storage capability on board a crowded flight deck.

Sea Stallion — CH-53D

Sea Stallion

This medium-lift helicopter can carry up to 37 troops or 8,000 pounds of supplies and equipment in support of amphibious and shore operations.

Sea Dragon — MH-53E
