Navy of the Future
There is an old expression: The only constant is change. That is especially true for the Navy as surface ships are being called on to play new roles — everything from homeland security to fighting the war on terrorism abroad.
With these new missions, future objectives must change. Ships will have to deploy more rapidly. They will have to respond to unanticipated threats. And they will have to operate more closely together, utilizing each others’ strengths. That’s where the Navy of the future comes in.
Known as the DD(X) surface combatant family of ships, the Navy of the future will include the DD(X) destroyer, CG(X) cruiser and (LCS) littoral combat ship. The advantages to this synergy include:
- Operating in deep water and littoral (near-shore) regions, while thwarting air and missile threats in both areas
- A sharing of technology, with a corresponding reduction in development costs during the design phase
- Being able to effectively respond to particular scenarios, thanks to interchangeable mission modules
