The gift of sight is especially critical for Sailors, Marines and aviators as they defend our country. That’s why Navy Optometrists are vital in maintaining our servicemembers’ effectiveness, whether guiding an F-18 to land on a carrier or tracking enemy vessels from hundreds of miles away.
What will you do?
As a Navy Optometrist, you’ll be stationed at one of many military treatment facilities worldwide – providing comprehensive ocular examinations, including evaluation of ocular health and the prescription of glasses and contact lenses. You’ll serve the routine and acute eye-care needs of military personnel, from examination and evaluation to prescription of the most effective treatment options. Promote the importance of visual health, safety and self-care to overall well-being.
Take advantage of continuing education training as well as management and teaching opportunities. All while ensuring the operational readiness of the Fleet.
In addition, you could take advantage of opportunities for treating submariner and aviation personnel, as well as become eligible for vision research and laboratory management positions.
Requirements
Basic Requirements
- Doctor of optometry degree from a college or university recognized by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education or the American Optometric Association
- Licensed to practice optometry by one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia
- Eligible to be licensed by a state or the District of Columbia by having passed Parts I, II and III of the National Board Exam
- Active state license is required upon entering Active Duty
Preferred Requirements
- Graduate school GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
- Professional experience
- Affiliation with national professional organization
