Medical Corps (Physicians)

You want to strive to make things better. To save lives and help people in need. To you, medicine isn’t just a job.

Here, it’s a mission.

As a physician in the Navy Medical Corps, you will make a difference. Utilizing the latest, state-of-the-art equipment, you’ll attend to the brave Sailors, Marines and servicemembers who defend our freedom. As well as their families. Helping patients in need – at home and abroad. On bases, at sea or wherever duty beckons. And you’ll do it all free from many of the hassles that bog down civilian physicians.

As an Officer in the Navy Medical Corps, you’ll lead the way, delivering care to more than 500,000 men, women and children around the globe. You’ll take a position at the forefront of health care, working side by side with teams of experts. Industry leaders who share a more ambitious approach to caregiving.

You’ll gain invaluable experience with state-of-the-art medical equipment like Light Emitting Diode (LED) probes, developed in conjunction with NASA to heal wounds faster. You’ll practice the most up-to-date procedures, such as “forward surgery,” using a portable telecommunications system to link field medics with larger medical facilities for lifesaving consultation and care. You’ll be privy to high-tech training so advanced the civilian world may not even be aware of it yet.

And you’ll find none of the roadblocks associated with civilian medicine. No malpractice insurance to buy, no staff to hire, no equipment to acquire and no office to furnish. This is the Navy. Everything is handled and an established practice is waiting.

In the Navy Medical Corps, you’ll attain a broader spectrum of experience – faster. Ongoing training and the chance to advance your skills and career in a way few find in the civilian world. There are generous scholarship opportunities, bonus pay, a tax-free housing allowance and a flexible schedule that leaves more time for family and adventure.

But most important, you’re left with what you’ve always wanted to be…an outstanding physician.

Financial and Educational Benefits

Wherever you are in your medical career, the Navy can help ease the financial burdens and advance your career with generous scholarships, financial assistance and continuing education programs. Whether you’re a student, resident or practicing physician, the Navy has a program that can help you make a difference.

  • are you a student?
100% of tuition coverage for medical school Don't let the high cost of medical school thwart your dream of becoming a doctor. The Navy has generous financial assistance programs available to help medical students – and will determine the offer that works best for you.
    • Consider the Navy Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP): It covers 100% of medical school tuition – along with a monthly stipend of $1,605 to cover living expenses for up to four years. And on top of that: a sign-on bonus of up to $20,000.*

Consider the Navy Health Services Collegiate Program (HSCP): It provides anywhere from $143,000 to $240,000 while attending medical school – including a monthly military salary plus generous food and housing allowances.† Not to mention comprehensive health-care benefits. Note that this specific offer is exclusive to the Navy and not available in other military service branches.

  • are you a resident?
Get potentially over $190,000 during your residency There’s no real way to prepare for your residency. The long hours. The overwhelming work. The possibility of relocation. But, in the Navy, becoming a resident won’t put you further behind financially.
    • We offer potentially over $190,000 to assist you during your residency. The Financial Assistance Program is an annual grant of $28,454 and a monthly stipend of $1,605 for up to 48 months.

  • are you a practicing physician?
UP TO $114,900 TO REPAY STUDENT LOANS There's no reason to be overwhelmed by the cost of your education. As an Active Duty Officer in the Medical Corps, you can get up to $114,900 to repay your medical school loans by applying to receive $38,300 each year for up to three years.
    • To become eligible for the Health Professions Loan Repayment Program, you must serve as an Active Duty Medical Corps Officer for each year you receive the loan payment, with a minimum three-year service obligation.
