Civilian Technology Careers
There are many opportunities to practice your technological abilities in a civilian career. After the Navy, jobs vary from software engineer to information research scientist and network architect to computer science professor. Check out these available fields and see what speaks to you and your interests.
Information Security Analyst
Information Security Analysts plan, implement, upgrade or monitor security measures for the protection of computer networks and information. They may ensure that appropriate security controls are in place that will safeguard digital files and vital electronic infrastructure. And they may respond to computer security breaches and viruses.
Hardware Engineer
Computer Hardware Engineers research, design, develop, or test computer or computer-related equipment for commercial, industrial, military or scientific use. They may supervise the manufacture and installation of computer or computer-related equipment and components.
Information Research Scientist
Information Research Scientists conduct research into fundamental computer and information science as theorists, designers or inventors. They develop solutions to problems in the fields of computer hardware and software.
Information Systems Manager
Information Systems Managers plan, direct or coordinate activities in such fields as electronic data processing, information systems, systems analysis and computer programming.
Network Architect
Network Architects design and implement computer and information networks, such as local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), intranets, extranets and other data communications networks. They perform network modeling, analysis and planning. They may also design network and computer security measures.
Network Support Specialist
Network Support Specialists analyze, test, troubleshoot and evaluate existing network systems, such as local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), and Internet systems or a segment of a network system. They also perform network maintenance to ensure networks operate correctly with minimal interruption.
Software Developer
Software Developers develop, create and modify general computer applications software or specialized utility programs. They analyze user needs and develop software solutions. They may also design software or customize software for client use with the aim of optimizing operational efficiency.
Systems Analyst
Systems Analysts analyze science, engineering, business and other data processing problems to implement and improve computer systems. They analyze user requirements, procedures and problems to automate or improve existing systems and review computer system capabilities, workflow and scheduling limitations.
Computer Science Professor
Computer Science Professors teach courses in computer science. They may specialize in a field of computer science, such as the design and function of computers or operations and research analysis. This includes both professors primarily engaged in teaching and those who do a combination of teaching and research.
User Support Specialist
User Support Specialists provide technical assistance to computer users. They answer questions or resolve computer problems for clients in person or via telephone or electronically. And they may provide assistance concerning the use of computer hardware and software, including printing, installation, word processing, electronic mail and operating systems.
